The Real Breakfast of Champions
You don't need some overpriced juicer to have a nutritious blast in the morning. All you need is a blender and a stock of the right ingredients. This is what my family wakes up to each morning, offered as a jumping off point. Adjust the items below for your own needs and tastes.
Oh yeah, one more thing. I don't call them smoothies. A smoothie sounds like some jerk trying to talk his hand into my wallet. It's thick, it's creamy, it's delicious, it's a shake, allright? Allright.
Morning Shake (Serves 3-4):
Two bananas
One pitted peach cut into chunks
One cored apple cut into chunks
Handful of Frozen Strawberries
" " " frozen blueberries
" " " frozen pineapple chunks
Two handfuls fresh blueberries
Three tablespoons wheat germ
Three tablespoons Trader Joe's flax seed oil
Three tablespoons flax seed
Trader Joe's Organic Hemp Vanilla Flavored Protein Powder
Two handfuls spinach, kale or both
Half of a carrot
One half cup Greek yogurt
Fill blender pitcher halfway with coconut milk, (I like Trader Joe's Vanilla Coconut Milk Beverage (unsweetened) in mine, but use what you'd like. Trader Joe's Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Smooth Non-Dairy Beverage is fun too.
Chop-Mix-Purée-Voilà! Breakfast in a cup! Gotta run? It can even travel with you!
Update! Other things I've added to the mix since the original posting have included: Avocados, various fruit juices, cow milk, pears and mango! It's really up to you, though I think that the frozen fruit is a must because it makes it so much more cold and shake-like.
Update Update! Sapote! I'll be posting about this wonderful, flavorful, custard-like addition in an upcoming post.
Enjoy!
