Three Shades of Vanilla
Where do ideas come from? Sometimes you just steal them, like the vanilla ice cream with extra virgin olive oil and sea salt above that I first enjoyed at Pizzeria Picco in Larkspur, CA. Brilliant and delicious, it was also easy to make at home. Then I began to play with the idea.
Why not replace the sea salt with a good, aged balsamic vinegar? Well, why not? This variation was just wonderful. The flavors played together so well. Vanilla makes a yummy canvas, so I decided to paint a little more.
Pickled watermelon rind and kettle korn anyone? The kettle korn part was a swipe from a dessert at J&G Grill in Utah. The watermelon rind was a marvel that Wonder Woman had canned and I'd been snacking on lately. The combination of the rind, the korn, and the ice cream was a real treat.
It doesn't matter where your ideas or inspiration comes from so long as the results are pleasing to your palate. Play with your food, folks. You'll be delighted with what you can create.
