Decoration Day, Oakland Style

Chowbacca! thanks our service men and women, our first responders who run toward instead of away from danger and all those who have sacrificed for the betterment of all.

In the South, Memorial Day is often referred to by it's older and in our opinion more poetic moniker: "Decoration Day."

It is a day where we all come together as families and communities and share food and drink, so drink responsibly and don't burn that steak!

Chowbacca! Official Ribeye Steak Recipe:
  • A big-ass ribeye steak (bone-in, always, 20 or more ounces).
  • Salt.
  • Pepper.
  • Fire.
Salt and pepper your steak at least 20 minutes before grilling. Leave the steak out of the refrigerator for hours before cooking to bring the meat closer to room temperature.

Grill the steak directly over an intolerably hot fire (when all charcoal has turned grey-white), two minutes per side. Transfer the steak to the cold side of the grill and cover, allowing the steak to cook to medium doneness, covered, for another 7-10 minutes depending on weight.

Remember, you can always cook a steak more if it is underdone, but you can't fix over-cooked.

Gotcha.

Yes, that is a bowl of completely legal cannabis, a medicinal herb used by Oakland natives to tolerate the pain of occasionally having to tolerate hanging out with snobby San Franciscans.

Rabe of broccoli and shell-on shrimps marinated in Sriracha and salsa.
