Gizmos: Zojirushi Home Bakery Supreme Bread Maker
|I guess they liked it|
I'm a gadget guy. I use them all day long. In the kitchen, however, a gadget has to serve a real, not marketed, purpose to earn my dollars. I'm not some multitasker stickler like a certain celebrity food dude. I love my unitasking digital instant read thermometer but abhor the thought of having the likes of a ham dogger in my home. Although, I must confess to coveting my sister's Easy Bake Oven when we were kids. My parents were progressive enough in the sixties to get dolls for we boys, but, alas, no oven for me.
Now, I have my own grown-up Easy Bake Oven: The Zojirushi Home Bakery Supreme Bread Maker.
I confess: Neither my wife or I have time to make fresh bread at home these days. Well, we didn't until now. How much easier than "add ingredients, push buttons, come back later" does a gadget need to be? With little effort it makes a 2 lb loaf of whatever loaf you'd like, and it makes the house smell awesome. The machine even has a safety feature that shuts it off before I'm an ordinary guy burning down the house.
Clocking in at about 15 minutes from start to clean up, and it's a snap to clean, with a few hours of the machine doing its thing unattended, we won't be buying much preservative-filled bread at our house going forward. While it makes the bread I can make ... whatever! Best of all, it's fun to use, well-built, and I don't feel like I'm stuck with some Ron Popeil or George Foreman door stop. It also makes cake batter, sourdough starter, pizza dough, and even jam if I'm pressed for time. Heck, I'm souring up some sourdough starter as I type these words. Well, the Zojirushi is keeping it at the right temperature. It even makes meatloaf! Stick that in your multitasker basket, Mr. Brown.
One small thing about one large thing: If you have a small kitchen, this machine has a big footprint, (17" W x 8 1/2" D x 12 1/4" H). One other thing: The documentation makes most furniture assembly instruction booklets seem simple by comparison. Fortunately, once you pour through it all they're easy to follow, and once you've used the machine a couple of times you don't need them. If you do still need them, the Zojirushi web site offers instructional videos and FAQs. Other than those things, the Zojirishi Supreme Bread Maker may be the best All-Growns-Up Easy Bake Oven ever. Maybe you should give yourself one for the holidays? Too soon?
